A Night of Hell with Van Morrison

by Chris Huff

The worst live music experience I've ever had was Van Morrison at the
Supper Club in March1996. He came out, did four really cool old blues songs
including "Baby Please Don't Go", then proceeded to let the band solo for
the next half hour. Then he did "Slim Slow Slider" and "TupeloHoney".
The band then soloed for the next HOUR -now, the band was Georgie Fame
and the Flames whoare great, but did I pay $80 to hear them play jazz? No, I
wanted Van Morrison to SING - how silly of me. As the Jam Session got to a
low volume, the audience started shouting andclapping, "Sing, Van! Play
some f-ing songs!Play Domino! etc...." Van comes up to the mike and
says, "Now, listen. Anybody who wants to hear their favorite Van Morrison
songs tonight or some shyte - well, it ain't gonna happen. I'm not gonna play
Gloria. I'm not gonna play Brown Eyed Girl. I'm not gonna play Into the
Mystic. I'm not gonna play Domino. I'm not gonna play And It Stoned Me. I'm
not gonna play Here Comes theNight. And if you want to hear those songs,
you might as well piss off." Then he left the stage and the band, looking very
sheepish, like "he just pays us, man, it's not our fault, please don't throw
anything". The audience is FREAKING OUT, starting to boo, etc...Van comes
back, and concert promoter Ron Delsener comes onstage with $3000 IN
CASH which he offers to Van in exchange for playing one of those songs.
